Former senator John Madigan, champion of family law reform, died today at age 53

It was with immense sadness that we heard that John Madigan, former independent senator passed away after a long illness. John was a fierce defender, and perhaps one of the most fervent, of all those that had suffered at the hands of family breakdown.

More than once we've accompanied John in Parliament House to speak on this most difficult of subjects. John uniquely battled against all odds to bring about reform in his 6-year tenure and took it further than most before and since. He will be sorely missed by all those that have had the fortune to spend time with this humble but strongly principled man.

On behalf of all of us at Parents Beyond Breakup and all those that we help support, we offer our sincere condolences to John's family; his wife Teresa, his daughter Lucy and his son Jack.

Our thoughts are with you during this time. John will be in our hearts and memories forever. Australia has lost a great man and an icon but it has also gained from his passion and his dedication. May he rest in peace.
