ABS link suicide to relationship breakdown

The ABS has now published 2017 suicide data breakdowns indicating the leading psycho-social factors that are linked to suicide.

The top listed factor, self harm, might be considered symptomatic of underlying mental health rather than a driver of suicide per se.

Moving to items 2 and 3 on the list, we see factors relating to relationship breakdown.
  • Z635 Disruption of family by separation and divorce, and
  • Z630 Problems in relationship with spouse or partner
The above two factors are linked to a combined total of 818 suicides, out of a total of 1,966 deaths by suicide that 'could be linked to' a specific psycho-social factors. This means that, when the factors are known, 41.6% of suicides are related to family & relationship difficulty or breakdown.

Factor or item 4 (Z653) is related to legal problems and there is no additional insight into what these are at this time, but it is logical to assume that it would include matters such as DV and custodial issues, which again relate to relationship breakdown. To be clear, it is unknown the extent to which family breakdown related legal issues are included in this 4th listed factor.

Factor or item 5  (634) include the disappearance of a family member; a facet of many family breakdowns where custody is in question.
